11 days and COUNTING…

Pretty sure this is the longest I’ve gone without posting. But fear not, I have kept up with all my photos. So here they are.

Creme BrulECH!
10.10.08 – “Creme BrulECH!” – 107/365

Maybe I’m uncultured. Maybe I’m supremely American. Maybe my abhorrence for all things pudding, jello, and cream restrict me. I had my first creme brulee last night and I really tried to enjoy it. I liked the taste and the texture of the burntness, but the creme part, not so much. I just can’t get past it.

Merchandising, Merchandising!
10.9.08 – “Merchandising, Merchandising!” – 106/365

This is just a shot of one the products I’m going to start offering on my website. Hopefully it sells. We’ll see. I think it’s too cute, but that’s just me. Here’s a another one and you can see this one and all it’s options here , too.

P.S. If you don’t know the reference I’ve included in the title you must watch this video.

Oh Happy Day
10.8.08 – “Oh Happy Day” – 105/365

Today was the day. I finally got my iPhone. No words can express how happy I feel and how I know my life will certainly never be the same. Below is a short slideshow documenting the monumental event.

Upper Body
10.7.08 – “Upper Body” – 104/365

I have zero upper body strength. Zip.

Maria and everyone ELSE I work with, however, are total champs. Maria shows off her gnarly biceps in this shot. And I know there’s only supposed to be one photo a day, but the photo below is also worthy of peek. Michael makes me laugh.

Save the Ta-Tas
10.6.08 – “Save the Ta-Tas” – 103/365

Casey works at Best Buy who’s employee’s signature blue shirts have now been replaced with pink ones in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Something Different
10.5.08 – “Something Different” – 102/365

I shot some headshots for Casey at the studio where I work. Five hours and a million photos later I still love this one the most. Not sure why.

Something Borrowed
10.4.08 – “Something Borrowed” – 101/365

I had a wedding to shoot along the canal. It was a small casual wedding that went relatively flawlessly. This is one of my favorite shots of the whole day. Others can be seen here and a slideshow of my favorites can be seen here.

What Was He Thinking?
10.3.08 – “What Was He Thinking?” – 100/365

Nothing too eventful today other than a strange decision on Casey’s choice to throw the contents of a full cup of Pepsi on my van’s windshield. Having seen what Florida’s sun can do to such substances on vehicles I immediately had to go spend $8 at a car wash since none of the local gas stations have those window cleaner thingies anymore. Thanks, Case.

Boxes
10.2.08 – “Boxes” – 99/365

I wish I had the energy to take something better than this, but these boxes impose far too much inconvience in our small apartment to not at least be mentioned here. I hate them and can’t wait to fill them with stuff to eventually be unpacked in a fresh new space.

Sandalwood Day 2
10.1.08 – “Sandalwood Day 2” – 98/365

Unfortunately I did have to return to this school the next day. And even more unfortunate was the fact that I was not in ::ahem:: good company. The day went about as horribly as a work day at my job could. The only way to keep myself from standing up and driving away was to create a list of grievances I had about the company. To be nice I only photographed the title of the list, leaving out all the juicy details I’m the company wouldn’y appreciate being plastered on the web. My only hope is I have enough cajones to discuss these with my superiors before I vacate.

Sandalwood Day 1
9.30.08 – “Sandalwood Day 1” – 97/365

My work brought me to a school I care never to return to. The only joy the day brought was a steep incline between the rows of seats, which was promptly used by Maria and I as a mini ‘coaster. Fun times.

The Diner
9.29.08 – “The Diner” – 96/365

As the end of our life in FL draws closer I’m starting to really get around town and visit my favorite places to eat. This diner is as classic as it gets. Total 50s decor, family owned, I’ve seen the same waitresses and cooks there the past 3 years and all the foody is greasily delicious. My usual? The Cheese Melt. Mmmm…

Younger Days
9.28.08 – “Younger Days” – 96/365

Yep. Just another long day with no creativity left to take pictures. So here’s a framed photo that hangs in the hallway of our apartment. It’s me and a friend in Cozumel, 2004. Oh, the days…

casey by destiny

I know this is supposed to be strictly 365 posts, but I didn’t want to add this and then have it be missed later on. So here’s the animation we started last week. I actually finished it within hours of shooting it, with plans of making it twice the length later on with a second shoot, but Casey is rarely in the mood to do these sorts of things after a long day at work, so I decided to make due and finish it with what I had.

(Apparently my video was way too cool and Rufus for Youtube, so I can’t post it there due to copyright issues…)

Work, Work, Work

Relieving the Boredom
9.16.08 – “Relieving the Boredom” – 83/365

I’ve had two splendid days of work in a row. This is highly unusual and a much needed change (and is generally determined by the people I work with from one day to the next). Today I had a pleasant location change at 5am and went to a private Catholic school about an hour away from the studio.

For those of you who don’t talk to me on a daily basis and hear my horror/work stories, I work for a company that takes yearbook photos. Although I am a photographer, they are up to their eyeballs in them and put me on as cashier during the weekdays. This means I hand thousands of willful teeanagers an index card with an ID barcode and write them a receipt if their parents happen to care enough to buy the pictures.

While the photographers set up I’m usually used as a "model" for testing lighting. This usually results in one of three photos:
1. Big Cheesy Smile
2. Impersonation of Apathetic Teeny-Bopper
3. Obnoxious Facial Expression (which usually mirrors my disdain for how I spend my work days)

Today, however, was fun. Note: that IS a Starburst candy in my mouth, which means we had lovely nuns giving us candy and brownies to sweeten the deal.

Favorite Quotes of the day include:
“Northeast: Cah, cah…” – Christa
“I don’t really know what your meal thing is, but, uh you can just grab another box and fill it with sides.” – Me

Other interesting artifacts seen along the way can be found below:

Eager Beaver
9.15.08 – “Eager Beaver” – 82/365

Casey finally got his new drums in and is beyond excited. Aside from some sketchy snare drum issues (shell not exactly lining up with expensivo heads purchased specifically FOR the drum) the quality is outstanding. I’ll update with specifics on the set later. I also made a cheesy slideshow for your viewing pleasuring of his child-like enthusiasm upon opening the packages.

Belated Birthdayness
9.14.08 – “Belated Birthdayness” – 81/365

Some family were out of town on my birthday so we decided to wait until this weekend to celebrate at my mom’s house. Casey and I drove down and enjoyed home cooked food for once in a long while (chicken cordon bleu and broccoli salad). This pie was made instead of the traditional birthday cake as I am not a big fan of cake to begin with. The candles, so proudly placed by Casey, soon began to melt inside the cherry gooeyness and all that was left after a few minutes (and before the birthday song) were sad, dangly wick stumps. It was delicious, nevertheless, and we took half home to enjoy as a midnight snack. I had a great time and am sad/excited that it was my final Florida birthday. Next stop New Jersey!

Keeping Up

Breeze Maker
9.10.08 – “Breeze Maker” – 77/365

Lately I get all in a rush when cleaning or making those stop motion animations that I just have to have a temperature drop in the house. Unfortunately it couldn’t be any lower so we got these handy fans. Life savers.

End of Day
9.09.08 – “End of Day” – 76/365

Not much to say here. Drop dead tired at the end of the day. This is the view from my end of the couch.

Puppy Love
9.08.08 – “Puppy Love” – 75/365

So I had the day off, luckily. I decided to try for a second go-around with stop-motion animation. I desperately needed to clean the house, but really wanted to do something creative, sooo I combined the two. When Casey got home we inevitably went to the mall to visit the puppy store and found these two fat little guys breathing ridiculously hard. There’s just so much to love. The stop motion is made up of about 300 photos and took about five and a half hours to put together including the time to shoot all the photos. I strongly suggest never cleaning in this manner as it is pure torture. All I wanted to do was finish cleaning, but since I was halfway through I couldn’t stop and ruin the whole thing. FUN.

HAPPY SEPTEMBER!

Catching up on my blogging has become a big goal of mine, but organizing my finances, cross country move, and multiple jobs somehow manages to weigh heavy on the priority scale. I will get better someday I promise.

Desperation

9.5.08 – 72/365 – “Desparation”

Since I’m in the midst of a huge cross country move (FL to NYC) I’m doing some major purging to reduce the amount of junk we haul up there. Most of it goes to Goodwill or trash, but some is sellable so I’m on a mission to make some cash off it. You can see my desparation, here, selling poly-fil. Sigh.

Back to School!

9.4.08 – 71/365 – “Back to School!”

So it’s fall again and you know what that means. Underclass photos! My days generally start at 5am and end at 5-6pm. It’s definitely tiring and I’m excited to only be working in the studio this weekend.

Trashy

9.3.08 – 70/365 – “Trashy”

Life is hectic as usual and as this coffee table displays, lots of stuff gets neglected including cleaning up around the apartment. I’m hoping to alleviate this whole situation by the end of the week.

Word Machine

9.2.08 – 69/365 – “Word Machine”

I love my computer so much I take photos of it. Sad.

Living Room Unplugged

9.1.08 – 68/365 – “Living Room Unplugged”

Many nights Casey will pick up one of our guitars and start picking away, eventually leading to a late night acoustic jam. Lots of fun for us, probably not so much fun for our neighbors.

Much Labor on Labor Day

Lots of stuff going on in my life at this point and YET I somehow manage to squeeze these photos in. I don’t have one for today yet, that’s a work in a progress, but here are my picks for the last week or so.

I-95, I Despise

8.31.08 – 67/365 – “I-95, I Despise”

So one party and roughly 23 loads of laundry later, Casey and I made our way back up to Jacksonville. This was my view the WHOLE way.

Untitled

8.30.08 – 66/365 – “Untitled”

Casey’s dad bought a jammin’ new camera and I immediately launched into finding it’s nitty-gritty details and specs. Delicious.

Twigs and Berries

8.29.08 – 65/365 – “Twigs and Berries”

During our second day on holiday we were given the opportunity of babysitting Casey’s niece, Kendall. She’s about 15 months and greeted us at the door in the most adorable striped, two-piece dress. The explanation for this came from Casey’s sister, Shayne, who declared that she wanted her to wear something she thought we’d put on our own kid so we could pretend she was ours for the day and get a gist for THAT whole situation.

We took her to the local mall, browsed a book store, and a puppy store before settling down at Smoothie King to get Kendall her favorite: Twigs and Berries!

Oh, Mulder...

8.28.08 – 64/365 – “Oh, Mulder…”

Casey and I left for a mini-vacay to his mother’s before our big move and stopped off at his favorite burger joint, Doubles. Lo and behold, they had an X-Files pinball machine!! I was overcome with joy and immediately started snapping pictures.

I’ve recently become obsessed with show, thanks to Casey. I’d never seen the show but was interested in seeing the movie. He said I had to at least watch the show first, TIVOed it for me, and the rest is history.

Badoom, Ching!

8.27.08 – 63/365 – “Badoom, Ching!”

My boyfriend, Casey, has been deep in research for nearly a year now planning a big purchase of a new drumset. He’s had his current one almost ten years and has DEFINITELY out grown it.

Finally, the day came when it ARRIVED! I was greeted after a brief knock at the door by a mountain of UPS boxes blocking my exit (definitely a fire hazard). Casey was bursting at the seams to say the least.

*note: This delivery only included his cymbals, cymbal stands, and drum cases. The actual set is yet to come!

For more delivery fun check out other photos from the fun-filled unpacking!

Dinosaur Under the Couch

8.26.08 – 62/365 – “Dinosaur Under the Couch”

I’m in the pre-stages of moving essentially from coast to coast (Florida to NY), so it’s CONSOLIDATION TIME! I’m packing clothes we won’t need for a while, Christmas supplies, and craft stuff (::sniff, sniff…I know:::) to store at my parent’s while we move the important stuff first.

The other huge task at hand is emptying all important info and photos from obsolete computers that are just taking up space at this point. I plan on selling these antiques as soon as I’m done (probably for parts). When I pulled this laptop from under the couch I could barely lift it up it was SOOOO heavy. I was amazed at the difference between it and the one I have now. Amazing.

Dogs are A'Barkin'

8.25.08 – 61/365 – “Dogs are A’Barkin'”

Not much to say here. I was pooped at the end of the day and just managed to snap this shot of Casey’s tootsies.

Fay Lingers

8.24.08 – 60/365 – “Fay Lingers”

Fay had been washed away for the most part, however her flooding lingered for a while especially in the streets, between medians and such. This is a view from my drivers seat at a busy intersection.

Stud

8.23.08 – 59/365 – “Stud”

I performed what may be my last classically oriented concert ever on August 23. My professor, Char, puts on a recital near the end of every summer and has done so for 25 years. This year was the 25th and final one as she has decided to retire the concert series. With 1,400 in the audience and news personnel around every corner, I was asked to be a featured performer and do a piece called “Stubernic” with Char and fellow UNF grad (and boyfriend), Casey. The whole concert was emotional to say the least, but ended with a crowd favorite, Rockin’ Ricky Rocket (Char sits and pretends to be playing a drumset while we all do the sounds of each instrument with our voices). As tradition continues, we all dress up in fanciful costumes and colorful getups. Mike here went with my suggestion to wear the lime green bandana around his neck, muffler style, instead of as a do-rag. I think it looks fabulous. You can see other amazing wardrobe choices here.

They Call it Stormy Monday

It’s been a few days since my last post and a whole mess of stuff has gone down. Between Tropical Storm Fay and a few other events I’ve been busy and stressed. Here’s the breakdown.

Unexpected
8.22.08 – 58/365 – “Unexpected”

Yesterday was quite a day. Aside from work being cancelled, all my rehearsals being moved to the end of the day (which never happened anyways, due to the storm), tearing everything out of our bedroom apartment so we could avoid the multiple tornado touch downs in our area, water damage in the living room, cracked windows, and unstable power, one huge event stood out among the crowd.

Around noon I was sitting on my computer in the living room and heard someone screaming "FIRE!" outside. I quickly jumped up and looked outside and indeed my neighbor’s apartment was in flames. I grabbed my phone and bolted outside dialing 9-1-1, while running towards the building. I was giving directions to the fire station when my neighbor ran out of the apartment screaming "I NEED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS!!". No one else was around. I ran up to him, telling him I called the police, and ran up to the building. I’m not sure what I was thinking, but adrenaline told me to do something. So I started pounding on the door of the apartment next to his, the heat of the flames and the smoke stinging my eyes and pretty much preventing any breathing. Nobody answered the door no matter how desperately I yelled and banged on the door.

Meanwhile, two other neighbors ran over and gave him fire extinguishers. I ran up the stairs in the front of his door to get people out of the apartment above him and as I approach the flaming door of the 2nd floor the flames and smoke were so overwhelming I didn’t know what to do. Suddenly, there was LOUD banging/popping and I screamed. My neighbor starts screaming "GET DOWN!!! THERE’S A GUN IN THERE!!!". So I’m trapped on the stairs. If I go up I get burned from the 2nd story flames, if I go down I’m right in front of the open apartment door with the gun going off. I don’t know what else to do but make a run for it and sprint down the stairs, rounds continously popping off. I make it past the door and tear away from the building and see my boyfriend blocking his body with a tree. I run up to my inconsolable neighbor who is screaming about his dog that’s still in the apartment. Finally the fire trucks arrive and my boyfriend pulls me away to stay away from the gun which is still going off.

All the while it’s raining harder than I’ve ever seen it rain and tornado warnings are in effect for our street. We go back to our porch and watch the firemen pull people from the building, pets in their arms, black from the smoke. An elderly neighbor hands me a dry towel and offers me tea. I was gone at this point, crying harder than I’ve cried in a long time. After a half hour or so, my boyfriend takes me inside and gets me some dry clothes and tells me to breathe.

I still don’t know what caused the fire or what the outcome was. I was barely able to snap this photo and am 100% positive now that I could never be a photojournalist. I felt guilty and sick to my stomach after taking it. I hope no one was seriously hurt or died, although I’m sure my neighbor lost his dog, which makes me incredibly sad.

Note: I post this story not to invoke sympathy, but as a therapeutic tool to understanding the turn of events and coming to terms with what I experienced.

Fay-tigued
8.21.08 – 57/365 – “Fay-tigued”

So, Fay strikes again, this time at the work place. All our sessions were cancelled and the break called for immediate cleaning duty for all!! Yay! Alex, here, started with a clean sweep of the loft and then mopped. I did many things, one of which (painting the entire window sill and adjacent wall) proved entirely fruitless as Fay caused such incredible water damage two days later, we had to cancel all our appointments AGAIN and the paint was ruined anyways).

Boo, Fay!
8.20.08 – 56/365 – “Boo, Fay!”

So, for those of you who don’t know I live in Florida and needless to say was very tired of hearing about this wimpy Tropical Storm Fay from every local TV station was trying to get everyone to put hurricane shutters on their doors and stock up on food. However, I did get a day off from work because of it and took the unexpected holiday, with my beau, to the mall (I am an American, am I not?)!

This photo depicts how frighteningly early Halloween crap has appeared in stores this year. Note: I saw this stuff in the stores two weeks before I actually took this photo…too early!!!

I Heart Bento
8.19.08 – 55/365 – “I Heart Bento”

So for a while I’ve been using Bento’s free trial on my MPB and simply couldn’t get enough of it. So I went and bought the real deal at my local Apple Store. Personally, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to live without it from now on and I don’t know how I did anything before I discovered it. Check it out, share the love.
